EDUCATION COMMITTEE
The Education Committee of the CFUW White Rock/Surrey club is committed to:
- Promoting and supporting a sound concept of educational policies
within the community.
- Monitoring local education issues and bringing these to the club's
attention.
- Writing letters and briefs to appropriate elected officials that are
issued through the Club President relating to educational concerns in the
community, province or country.
- Meeting with local politicians to advocate for CFUW resolutions and
policies.
Present Activities of the Committee:

The committee drafted the resolution Early Childhood
Learning and Development approved by the BC AGM in April 2006. Our
committee is pursuing action plans encouraging elected officials to increase
sustainable funding for programs following the fundamentals of the resolution.

One to One Literacy Program - We train volunteers to
provide students, in a one to one situation, with rich literacy experiences
that focus on improvement of reading and conversational skills and self
confidence. The program is associated with the One to One Literacy Society in
Vancouver, a volunteer based, non-profit organization. Our club provides a
collection of reading materials to support this program which is active at
three (3) elementary schools in the Surrey School District.

Assistance with the book collections at the Children's
Library and the Parents' Resource Library at Crescent Beach
Services.

Attendance at school trustee meetings, educational forums
and seminars that enhance the members' knowledge base.
ENVIRONMENT COMMITTEE
The Environment Committee is committed to:

Educating themselves and local CFUW
members about current environmental concerns and practical steps to deal with those concerns. |

Continuing support of Burns Bog environmental concerns
where needed. |

Choosing a larger environmental
concern to deal with each year. |
 |
Following up on CFUW resolutions
which are related to the environment. |
This year, the Environment
Committee is looking at the problem of clean water. Such concerns as
water bottles and dumping of waste into the Bay are examples.
